1. What is a business industry code?

A business industry code is a sequence of numbers encoded to represent a specific business industry. This group includes:

Pre-disposal treatment and other treatment of solid and non-solid non-hazardous waste, such as:

– Operation of sites for disposal of non-hazardous waste;

– Disposal of non-hazardous waste by burning or incineration or other methods with or without leading to the production of electricity or steam, alternative fuels, biogas, ash, fly ash or other products for use;

– Treatment of organic waste for disposal;

– Treatment of organic waste for landfill or permanent storage;

– Production of compost from organic waste.

This group also includes:

– Permanent underground storage of waste in deep geological cavities such as salt mines or potash mines;

– Storage of captured CO₂.

Excludes:

– Operation of waste transfer stations is classified under group 381 (Waste collection);

– Activities of facilities where reusable materials are in mixed forms such as paper, plastics, used beverage cans, and metals, which need to be separately sorted, are classified under group 3830 (Recycling of sorted materials);

– Carbon capture activities; decontamination and cleaning of soil and water; disposal of contaminated materials are classified under group 39000 (Remediation activities and other waste management services).

This group includes: Disposal of non-hazardous waste by burning or incineration or other methods that result in electricity generation.

38212: Other treatment and disposal of non-hazardous waste (excluding electricity generation from waste)

This group includes:

Pre-disposal treatment and other treatment of solid and non-solid non-hazardous waste, such as:

– Operation of sites for disposal of non-hazardous waste;

– Disposal of non-hazardous waste by burning or incineration or other methods that do not result in electricity generation; with or without leading to the production of steam, alternative fuels, biogas, ash, fly ash or other products for use;

– Treatment of organic waste for disposal;

– Treatment of organic waste for landfill or permanent storage;

– Production of compost from organic waste.

This group also includes:

– Permanent underground storage of waste in deep geological cavities such as salt mines or potash mines;
