1. What is a Lawyer?
According to Article 2 of the Law on Lawyers of Vietnam 2006, a lawyer is a person who meets the standards and conditions for practicing law as stipulated by the Law on Lawyers, providing legal services at the request of individuals, agencies, and organizations. Lawyers can work independently or practice within law firms or lawyers’ offices.

2. Principles of practicing law according to Vietnamese law
Principles of practicing law are mandatory ethical and legal rules that every lawyer must adhere to when practicing. These principles are stipulated in Article 5 of the Law on Lawyers of Vietnam 2006 (amended and supplemented) and guiding documents.
2.1. Compliance with the Constitution and laws
Lawyers must operate within the framework of the law, respecting the values of justice and democracy. All acts violating the law shall be handled in accordance with regulations.
2.2. Adherence to the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct for Vietnamese Lawyers
Lawyers must be honest, respect objective truth, and not distort facts or provide false information. The Code of Ethics and Conduct for Vietnamese Lawyers (issued together with Decision 201/QD-HDLSTQ in 2019) details professional ethical standards.
2.3. Independence, honesty, and respect for objective truth.
Lawyers must be independent, honest, and respect objective truth, not allowing material or spiritual benefits or any other pressure to act contrary to the law and professional ethics.
2.4. Utilizing lawful measures to best protect clients’ legitimate rights and interests
Lawyers have the obligation to be dedicated to their work, develop their capacity, use their professional knowledge, skills, and lawful measures to best protect the legitimate rights and interests of clients in accordance with the law and the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct for Vietnamese Lawyers.
2.5. Being accountable before the law for lawyers’ professional activities
This is one of the core principles of the legal profession, ensuring that lawyers not only protect client rights but also comply with the law, avoiding abuse of the profession to commit illegal acts.
