1. General regulations for road markings
Road markings are a form of signaling to guide and control traffic to improve safety and traffic flow.
Road markings can be used independently and can be combined with other types of road signs or traffic control lights.
Road markings include lines, letters, and drawings on the surface of the road, on sidewalks, on traffic structures and some other parts of the road to regulate traffic order and boundary size. Limits of traffic works, indicating the prescribed direction of traffic lanes.
Road markings must ensure that the vehicle runs smoothly on the road, ensure grip between the tires and the road surface, are not slippery, and are not 6 mm higher than the road surface.
When used, the choice of road markings must ensure reasonable traffic organization for each route and be based on the width of the road surface, vehicle speed, traffic volume, vehicles and pedestrians. Join traffic to decide.
For highways, roads with design speeds ≥ 60 km/h and roads with V85 speeds of 80 km/h or more, road markings must have reflective materials. Other types of roads, based on financial capacity and other requirements, can use reflective materials.

2. Classification of road markings
– Based on the location of use, road markings are divided into two types: lines on the ground (including lines on the road surface: along the road, across the road and other types of lines) and vertical lines.
+ The lines on the ground used to designate different road sections on the ground are white, except for some lines specified in Appendix G, which are yellow. In some cases, other colors can be used to increase the level of traffic warning on the road surface.
+ Vertical lines drawn on sidewalks, traffic structures and some other parts of the road. This type of line combines yellow lines and black lines or white lines and red lines.
– Based on the drawing method, road markings are divided into three types as follows:
+ Roadside lines are lines drawn along the direction of vehicles running on the road;
+ Road crossing lines are lines that cross the road or form a diagonal angle with the direction of traffic;
+ Other types of lines are types of letter symbols or other forms.
– Based on the function and meaning of use, road markings include: command lines, warning lines, instruction lines, and speed reduction lines.
– Based on shape and style, road markings are divided into the following two types:
+ Markings on the road surface, on the sidewalk (sidewalk) or at the lane separation boundary, including solid lines and broken lines;
+ Letters and pictograms include letters, numbers or drawings on the road surface.
3. Meaning and size of road markings
The meaning and size of common road markings are specified in Appendix G.
4. Effect of road markings
Road markings when used independently, traffic participants must follow the meaning of the road markings. When used in combination with traffic lights and signs, traffic participants must obey the meaning and commands of both road markings and signal lights and signs in the order specified in Article 10. 4 of National Technical Regulation QCVN 41:2019/BGTVT on Road Signs
