Front discusses East Sea issue
HA NOI — The Viet Nam Fatherland Front Central Committee (VFFCC) met yesterday to discuss issues relating to recent happenings in the East Sea.
Participants exchanged views over the wrongdoings committed by three Chinese marine surveillance vessels which cut the exploration cables of a PetroVietnam ship as it was conducting seismic surveys within Viet Nam's exclusive economic zone. They agreed that China needed to strictly abide by the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea as well as recent commitments that China has made.
Delegates said the skirmishes on the East Sea could not be resolved in the short term and required the concerned sides to patiently settle the incidents through dialogue and peaceful solutions on the basis of mutual interests and international law. They added that the VFF and its member organisations should ensure dissemination of information to people from all walks of life to help them obtain a sound overview of the East Sea issue and the foreign policies of the Party and State.
VFFCC vice chairman Nguyen Van Pha said the ideas posed by the participants would be carefully analysed to help authorities efficiently solve the East Sea issue.
